Define Your Own Alter Ego

Your action step for this month is to identify where and when in your own life you’d like to perform better. Then, build an alter ego who can help you nail your performance there.

Simple enough… but in that kind of “easy” way that I expect may take all month.

For example, knowing that you want to be a better writer does give you a starting place. But “be a better writer” is too abstract. What does it mean, TO YOU, to be a better writer? Do you write faster? Edit less? Or do you connect with more clients, raise your rates, and take more vacations? You’ll need to lay out exactly what peak performance in this Field of Play really means to you.

Then, when you know HOW you want to show up, you get to work on WHO shows up on this Field. Will you channel Hemingway, or Stephen King? Is this the time to be David Ogilvy or J.K. Rowling? When you’re playing the part, will you feel happy, energized, powerful? Arrogant, demanding? It’s all a part of setting the tone, and the more specific you can get with it, the better outcome you’ll have.

So, even if you don’t have much practice building characters, try it out this month. I’ll be excited to see who you create as a potential alter ego, and where you plan to deploy this new identity.
