Jacob Olson on the Gaming Market

The gaming industry and gaming market overall is BOOMING. All those board games, video games, and interactive adventure experiences represent a robust and lucrative market — people are even spending $7 on games for every $1 they’re spending at the movies (see the chart here). The question, of course, is how you can connect with that market and find some great clients.

In this PWA-exclusive conversation, Jen Adams and Jacob Olson talked through the key issues related to working in the gaming space. Jacob, a longtime game player, found a way to combine his writing skills with his interests by taking on gaming clients. He’s done web copy, game guides, and character development for games. He was very generous in sharing his perspective about what gaming clients need, what they like to see from prospective writers, and ways you can stay on top of new games and new potential clients in the space.

The conversation included:

  • The one thing you HAVE to do before you approach a gaming industry client — and the good news is that this one thing is a pretty fun and interesting thing to do…
  • Where and how you can learn about new games and new potential clients (plus a few key tips about what to watch out for)
  • What you can do to build up a portfolio of samples, and the one thing you can write that is the closest thing to an “industry standard” sample for gaming clients
  • The impact of AI on the gaming market (including why, even as an early adopter of the technology, games are still not turning away from using human writers to drive ideation and campaigns)

Plus more, of course! Jacob even brought the specific tabletop game he had recently worked on to the call, so that you can see what a finished game project looks like. It’s a lot more interesting than most marketing campaigns.
