As a writer, leveling up sometimes requires an outside justification.
For my kids, that’s been easy lately. It’s back-to-school season, which means we have the perfect justification to change up our routines, letting go of activities that no longer fit, no longer work, or are no longer wanted.
But what about you? What excuse do you need to go through your files and folders, keeping what you like and letting go of what no longer serves you? What prompts you to audit where your time goes and move on from projects that don’t thrill you, or even finally admit that you’ve outgrown a client?
As grown-ups, we don’t have a back-to-school season per se. Plus, as freelancers, we don’t have bosses ordering us to rebrand or overhaul our operations.
This freedom is thrilling, and for many of us, freedom is why we chose the writer’s life in the first place.
But…
Well…
Sometimes, it’s nice to get bossed around a little bit, or have an outside “push” to change gears and mix things up.
So, in the spirit of being productive and fresh for fall, this is your push and your permission.
If there’s a part of your writing business — your niche, your branding, your social media, or your client mix — that no longer thrills you, suits you, or excites you… it’s a perfect time to let it go.
The season is changing, and you can harness that energy. Clear your desk, clear your mind, clear your calendar… whatever it takes, this is your time to have a mini-reboot and rejuvenation, recommitting to the parts of the writer’s life that you love best. Feel the freshness and newness of it all and have some fun with it.
